Current and Former Residents Bike Across Nearby State
The hot, dry weather isn't doing too many favors for those who are riding their bicycles across Iowa this week.

The state's annual "RAGBRAI" event started Sunday and continues through Saturday. Bikers essentially ride from one end of Iowa to the other, with this year's event stopping in Clinton.

A number of current and former Galesburg residents are taking part this year, including former WGIL employee Kevin Trueblood, now an radio station engineer in Wisconsin.

Trueblood tells WGIL the heat is definitely bearing down on the riders.

"You see a lot of people that are slowing down, taking more breaks," Trueblood said. "I know personally, by early, mid-afternoon I'm really dogging it by the last part of the ride-- it's just so hot."

"And especially if you have a head-wind, it takes so long to get there because everything just drains you between the wind, and the sun, and the heat."

Trueblood says some temperatures on the road in parts of Iowa have read 120-degrees. He says riders like him have taken advantage of every water break and stop to rest possible, and are looking forward to cooler temperatures starting Wednesday. Trueblood is riding with a group that has a support vehicle with them.

7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin is also a rider, and says through his Facebook page that he's soldiering on, but three other Galesburg residents went home due to either injury or dehydration.
