Local Firefighter Endorses Holiday Safety
State law prohibits the purchase of most fireworks, but there's still a few you can set off in Galesburg this Fourth of July holiday.

"You're limited to what's called 'novelties' if you want to shoot off fireworks," said Galesburg Firefighter Dan Foley. "That's like the 'poppers' that you throw on the ground, the smoke bombs, and sparklers are the big ones people will buy. In the City of Galesburg, we have one extra rule: that is, you're allowed to buy and shoot off sparklers...you cannot set off a sparkler in a public area."

Foles says those public areas include streets, parks, and even Lake Storey-- the site of Wednesday evening's Big Bang Boom fireworks display.

Foley says sparklers can be extremely dangerous, too-- capable of reaching twelve-hundred degree temperatures. He advises children not to run with or wave them in others' faces.

Foley warns against letting children near grills also. He suggests families don't keep their grills directly next to their homes either-- which can start a fire. According to Foley, twice as many fires will likely occur nationwide Wednesday because of Independence Day.
