Grocery Store Proposal Being Heard in Knoxville
There's still plenty of details for alderman to pour over, but Knoxville's city leader is already considering the benefits to a grocery store proposal submitted to alderman this week.

Representatives of the Independent Grocers Alliance presented plans this week for a store at the former PEO site. Acting Mayor Bob Johnson tells WGIL the IGA store would promote other downtown businesses and job growth.

"It would bring shopping downtown more, and more foot traffic," Johnson said. "It would help other businesses in town, because when people stop there, they have a tendency to stop at other places also. That's helpful. The projection is somewhere between 110 full-time [employees], and at least 20 part-time people."

Johnson says the IGA people considered the former grocery store building uptown, but found it's size wasn't suitable to compete with a HyVee or Wal-Mart. They are requesting over $1 million dollars from the city to complete the project.

Johnson says he's satisfied there's finally a "black and white" proposal for council members to tweak and learn more of. They''ll do that at a special meeting a week from Thursday.
