Liquor Ordinance Revised in Knox County
Liquor-pouring establishments in unincorporated Knox County can now begin alcohol sales at 7am.

It's one of several revisions made to the Liquor Control Ordinance, approved by the county board this week by a ten to four margin. A separate Sunday open fee of $250-dollars has also been waived in the changes.

Three of the county's sixteen permits aren't currently in use. Board Chair Greg Bacon says action had to be taken to entice more business, but also retain others.

"We're not reaping any benefits from those three licenses," Bacon said. "So we're trying to lower our fees a little bit and then entice a little bit more so maybe somebody else can open up."

"There's other places, We got two or three places that are going to get swallowed up if we don't act. And once they get swallowed up we lose all of that revenue," Bacon added.

The county takes in a cut of sales, gas, and various other taxes from those they've licensed to sell liquor.

Other ordinance revisions include a special event license increase of $10-dollars to $35-dollars, and a $5-dollar jump in renewal fees. The reductions made in license fees are expected to save bars over $3,000-dollars annually.

A motion Wednesday from one board member to disallow taverns from opening at 7am failed.
