Going Up, Up and Away in Galesburg this Weekend
Temperatures are off the records of earlier in the week, and organizers hope that will be enough to get around 20 hot-air balloons off the ground for some friendly competition this weekend.

The annual "Galesburg Great Balloon Race" is back again at Lake Storey. Co-organizer Jackie Saul says in addition to events like crafts for the kids and the annual "night glow" of balloons, there will be plenty of time for possible rides and competitions.

But Saul tells WGIL as usual, Mother Nature may still end up standing in the way.

"The pilots get together (and) they have a pilot briefing first, they look at the weather and kind of get an idea (of) what's going on," she said. "And then after that, before each flight, they always have a briefing to figure out what's going on."

In essence, winds have to be less than 10 miles per hour for balloons to launch. Weather conditions also have to be somewhat ideal for the Night Glows.

Balloons are expected to launch at 6pm Friday and Saturday, with other launches scheduled for 6am Saturday and Sunday.
