Abingdon Chief Calling it Quits
A tumultuous few months in the city of Abingdon has caused the chief of police to resign.

Frank Andrews tells WGIL he's basing his decision partly on the uncertainty surrounding Mayor Roger Stegall's fate in March.

"The mayor is up for re-election, and one thing about the police chief job all year is you're appointed every year-- that's is always hard to do," Andrews said. "So I'm putting everything into consideration. If there's a new mayor he may not want me to stay on, he may want his own chief."

"So I'm foreseeing that, and I'm foreseeing all the fighting and arguing that's coming and I don't want to be a part of that."

Stegall's come under fire of late for the way he runs Abingdon. Residents earlier this week submitted a petition calling for him to step down. However he declined, citing his duty to honor his four-year elected term.

Andrews, meanwhile, says he intends to still work part-time for the police department. He's worked in some fashion for the city the past twenty-eight years, and says he loves serving Abingdon.

Andrew's resignation is effective July 20th.
