Abingdon Council Disputes Acquiring More Property
The mayor of Abingdon insists he's not running a real estate business, and instead is only trying to clean up his city.

Mayor Roger Stegall wants the city council to approve acquiring the vacant home at 105 North Jefferson Street. The owner is willing to deed the property to them-- meaning the city would only front the costs for preparing the deed.

Stegall says acquiring the property now-- instead of demolishing it later-- is more cost-effective. Plus, it's in line with the city's economic development initiative.

"This would only make four properties," Stegall said. "Obviously, the city of Galesburg is a lot bigger than we are, but they're working on about twenty-five properties up there right now. We need to concentrate on getting out and working to bring this to fruition on our cleaning up Abingdon and getting rid of these old, dearly properties."

Alderman Sam Burgress claims the city's taken on enough extra expenditures with the properties acquired already.

Stegall says its Abingdon's responsibility to undertake these failing homes to preserve the community's safety. Council members tabled the issue this week and will take up the North Jefferson acquisition at their next meeting.
