| City Council Debates Capital Projects |
A Galesburg aldermen said something about the city's infrastructure needs Monday evening that some residents have been saying for awhile. Aldermen held a work session Monday night that was essentially an update of the city's five-year capital improvement plan they first supported last year. The plan includes money for the rail crossing grade separations, water plant improvements, and sidewalk and road repairs. But during a discussion about building a new gazebo at Lincoln Park to replace the one that has been in decay for years, Second Ward Alderman Wayne Dennis expressed a concern on behalf of his constituents.
"Why does the city let things go to heck, and then we start repairing it," Dennis said. "Why don't we repair it as it's deteriorating? This gazebo, for two years it's been like that. I've had people call me and say 'can the city look at this stuff before we start spending thousands of dollars to repair it.'"
It's a sentiment that resident Mike Kroll agreed with.
"The city, for the lack of wanting to spend money, has deferred or overlooked maintenance on a wide variety of things for many, many years<" Kroll said. "And the gazebo, as nice as it is, it's one of the lesser important things we haven't maintained."
Kroll cited street maintenance and sidewalk repairs, along with the city's water line system. As for the gazebo, by the way, the city is looking at using volunteer labor to put up a new gazebo, so that it can be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. |
