Abingdon Community Festival a Hit in '08
Entertainment, food, prizes and lots of smiles.

That's what this year's Abingdon Community Festival has brought to those who've celebrated their home town this weekend during the annual event, which puts the wraps on its 52nd year Monday with the presentation of trophies and awards, and the livestock auction.

Festival Association President Tom Wherley says the show stock numbers were strong, and overall, it's been a good festival this year.

"I've been very happy about it. Our hog numbers are good, livestock is good, we started a new class of goats this year (and had) a real good turnout."

Wherley says the fair is basically for the kids, something he says showed this year.

The kids have enjoyed the carnival, and a free show Saturday night by magician/comedian Tim Cole of Des Moines, Iowa.

And despite a lackluster economy and 19 fewer entries, the festival's biggest fundraiser, the Cake/Pie and Cookie auction, brought in over $8,300 this year. That tops 2007's total of around $7,100. The home-baked good that gathered the most money was a grand champion peach pie from Mickey Klokenga of Abingdon, which sold for $450.
