District 205 Summer Middle School Success the First Time
A summer school program that had never been offered before in the Galesburg School District did what it was supposed to do its first time out.

This summer was the first for District-205's summer school for middle school students, and that program's principal, Marilou Mol, recently told the Galesburg School Board that students selected for the program were required to take math and reading courses, and that nearly all of those who took part completed the program.

Mol says if math test scores are any indication, summer school was a success. "Sixth grade mathematics students averaged a 15.6 percent increase in score from their pre-test to their post-test," Mol said. "Seventh grade students averaged a 22-percent increase in score from their pre-test to post-test."

Mol says reading level advances were great, too. "Sixth graders gained an average of 1.03 grave levels in reading ability on that test," Mol said. "Seventh graders gained an average of 20-percent of one grade level in reading ability."

District officials say the elementary summer school also proved worthy this year, with possibly as many as half of the students likely not being retained in a grade level because of their participation.

Galesburg High School only offered Drivers Ed as a summer school course, officials say, because of wide use of a credit recovery program.
