Galesburg Council Wants to Strengthen Rental Inspections
Rental property owners, among others, in Galesburg who may not be too willing to make improvements to their properties might be well served by a trip to the hardware store now before it's too late.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night heard a proposal that would essentially streamline rental property and housing inspections that, among other things, would provide less of a warning time for rental inspections, and allow both fire and housing inspections to be done by one person

The current rental property codes were put in place roughly 45-years ago, and First Ward Alderman Ken Goad believes they weren't crafted in the best interest of tenants. "It seems to be that, from what I've heard (Monday night) and what I've known from the past, that, somewhere along the line, a sweetheart deal was given to the landlords and much to the dismay of the people who are doing the renting," Goad said. "I think it's been a disservice to these people. A lot of people have nowhere else to live."

There were also concerns brought up that some tenants may not be willing to report possible code violations to the city, for fear they'll be kicked out.

Those and a number of other ideas including focusing on inspections of dilapidated properties instead of focusing on inspections of all rental properties, will likely soon be brought to the council in ordinance form.
