Abingdon Police Officer Recognized for Saving a Life
An Abingdon police officer is being recognized for an act that his supervisor says saved the life of a young child.

Mayor Steve Darmer commended officer Ken Jones during Monday night's Abingdon City Council meeting for his recent efforts while responding to a report of a 15-month old girl unresponsive and not breathing at a home in the 600 block of South Washington Street.

Police Chief Fred Andrews says Jones is an experienced emergency responder, and his training helped both him and the child in distress.

"He started immediately to do CPR. On the second round of CPR the baby started breathing again, opened its eyes and had a good outcome. Officer Jones did a terrific job and saved that little girl's life."

Andrews says Jones is a full-time officer who's been on the force for at least a year and a half. He served before that as a part-time officer, and was also an emergency dispatcher for the city of Galesburg.

The chief says the department tries to keep up with CPR certification, and the latest situation is evidence that up-to-date training needs to continue because it can save lives.
