Sal Garza Announces Mayoral Run
A Galesburg man who's been active in a number of local organizations, and who also is employed by the State of Illinois, is the first to announce he's running for the city's top job. Sal Garza confirms to WGIL he intends on running for Galesburg Mayor, and will make that official in September.

"I'm in the race to win," Garza told WGIL. He declined to do a full interview with WGIL and the rest of the media, he says, so as not to create distractions for the current City Council and Incumbent Mayor Gary Smith.

Garza is a employee of the State of Illinois, working for the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity as a Senior Account Manager, and was formerly an engineer with Maytag before the Galesburg plant closed down in 2004.

He also is active in a number of local organizations, including the recent formation of a task force addressing the local poverty rate, along with the Galesburg Police and Fire Commission, the Hispanic Latino Resource Group, and the National Railroad Hall of Fame.

Because he is a State employee, Garza says because of an ethics requirement, he will be using all his own personal time and resources to run his campaign.

Smith has not announced if he will seek another term. The Mayoral election would be in April.
