Knoxville School District Finances Good; Board Member Submits Resignation
Thursday is the first day of school in the Knoxville School District, and parents would likely be pleased to know that the district isn't in danger of going under any time soon.

That's according to District-202 Superintendent Larry Carlton, who used a tentative 2009 Fiscal Year Budget presentation Wednesday night to describe the district's fund balances as healthy.

Carlton says, however, he's so far planning a budget that, in the Education Fund, has a $352,000 deficit, that he doesn't think will be as bad.

"On paper, yes, it looks bad," Carlton said. "But, I think, as we massage the budget during the course of the year, we're going to end up with a balanced budget again. We had a balanced budget (in the 2008 fiscal year)."

Carlton says the Education Fund currently has a nearly $4 million balance, due partially to an early receipt of property taxes, and the Governor actually okaying the last two state aid payments for the last fiscal year. So he says any deficit could easily be absorbed anyway.

The district's proposed, in total, $12.3 million spending plan will be voted on September 24th.

The District-202 Board Wednesday night did approve the resignation of board member Troy Marquith. He was hired as a junior high football coach several months ago, and Carlton says that would have created a conflict of interest. A search is on for a replacement, in which the district has 45 days to complete.
