Local Dem: Obama Running-Mate Not Without Faults
The local chair of the Knox County Democratic Party admits there aren't all pluses in Illinois Democrat Barack Obama's selection of Senator Joe Biden as his Presidential campaign running mate.

Norm Winick says he took a car-load to Springfield Saturday to see Obama and Biden together on stage for the first time since Obama's campaign woke many up with a text message announcing the choice.

Biden was incredibly critical of Obama when they ran against each other during the Democratic presidential primaries, and Winick tells WGIL there's the rub. "He can be somewhat caustic, and that came out in the primaries," Winick said. "There was no indication at all (on Saturday) that they were anything but best buddies, and I think they will be able to work with each other very well, the way many other rivals have in the past as candidates for President and Vice President. You have Ronald Reagan and George (H. W.) Bush, John F. Kennedy and LBJ. They were bitter rivals up until one selected the other to run with them. And they campaigned together, and won."

A number of area residents either are travelling to Denver, or already there for the Democratic National Convention which starts Monday; among them are Winick's wife Christine and Knox County Regional Superintendent of Schools Bonnie Harris, both delegates.

Congressman Phil Hare is one of the Barack Obama superdelegates, and he is expected to talk to reporters in a couple days from the convention floor.
