FEMA Disaster Assistance Deadline is Today
Time is running out to file applications for federal assistance for flood damage in Illinois.

Residents of 18 counties within the federal disaster declaration who sustained property damage are eligible for assistance, which officials say has topped more than 14-million dollars in grants and loans so far. The counties include Henderson, Mercer, Hancock and Rock Island -- and more than 31-hundred applications have been turned in. The cut-off to do so is today.

Susan Solomon, spokeswoman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, says senior citizens shouldn't be shy about applying for disaster recovery help. "Applying for, or receiving federal disaster assistance, will not cause them to lose social security benefits, pay additional taxes, or give up any benefit programs they may have," Solomon said. "A federal grant does not add to a senior's taxable income, as long as the grant is given as assistance to recover from a disaster."

Solomon says each applicant is approved for grants and considered for low-interest loans on an individual basis. She says the amount of money that's distributed to disaster applicants is based on individual need.

The grants are administered by FEMA, and the loans are from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
