Community Colleges Sound Off on State Funding Cuts
State budget cuts put a three-million dollar hole in grants for Illinois' community colleges, and students as well as others will be asked for their opinions on that.

The Illinois Community College Board is in the midst of holding a series of hearings to gather those opinions and address the potential measures the schools might take to deal with the funding loss.

Sue Morris, Vice Chairman of the Illinois Community College Board, says now that the money has been cut from community colleges, those facilities have to figure out how to deal with that. "They're talking about capping enrollment, they're talking about closing come classes, and of course, they're always talking about increased tuition," Morris said.

Morris says tuition hikes by themselves are a difficult option because they could price some young adults out of community colleges. Carl Sandburg College President Tom Schmidt said last month because of several millions of dollars in cuts to grants, it might be harder for some students who want to go to CSC or other colleges to actually do so.

The hearing to be held closest to the Galesburg area is scheduled for September 8th at Illinois Central College in East Peoria. A hearing was held Monday in Glen Ellyn. Another will be held in Carterville September 18th.
