Farm Bureau Endorses Schock in 18th District Congressional Race
Even though one candidate in the race has been a professional farm broadcaster in Downstate Illinois since 1973, a major Illinois farm group is endorsing someone else for Congress in the 18th Congressional District.

State Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria), seeking the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Peoria), has picked up an endorsement from ACTIVATOR, the political action committee affiliated with the Illinois Farm Bureau.

Speaking at a Springfield news conference Wednesday, Sangamon County Farm Bureau board member Rich Ramsey was light on specifics as to why Schock earned the nod over Democrat Colleen Callahan. Ramsey simply said the group making the endorsement thought Schock would be better able to advocate farm positions in Congress than would Callahan or the third candidate in the race, Green Party candidate Sheldon Schaefer of Peoria.

"I think that we have a responsibility to ensure some safety net," Schock said, regarding a Farm Bill he called flawed but which he would have approved if he were in Congress now. Farmers "don't necessarily want a subsidy when prices are high, because that usually results in higher cash rents and gets passed on to the landowners and not necessarily the producers."

Schock says he would like to see 15 to 20 percent ethanol in fuels available at the pump, as opposed to the current 10 percent.

The 18th Congressional District covers a portion of Knox County.
