Illinois Crops Approaching "Normal" Progress
Crops in Illinois are making progress, and officials say they're coming closer to average after a bad start.

The latest crop progress report from U-S-D-A's National Agriculture Statistics Service indicates that after another pleasant week for Illinois weather, the state is now well out of the flooding that permeated the midwest early in the summer.

U-S-D-A Statistician Margie Whitcotton says, however, some areas of the state are better than others.

"It's actually still pretty dry in southern Illinois. There's some areas down there in need of precipitation in order to reduce the rapidly declining topsoil moisture. Temperatures were cool, but they didn't have an adverse effect on the crop progress."

The report says corn in this part of the state is well above the state averages of 82-percent in the dough stage and 29-percent in the dent stage, with 95-percent and 47-percent respectively.

96-percent of the soybeans locally are setting pods, compared to 92-percent statewide.

Weather-wise, the western reporting district had an average temperature last week of 72-point-four degrees compared to 73-degrees statewide, and had a half-inch of rain compared to 58-one-hundredths statewide.
