AlWood to Ask Voters for Property Tax Hike
An effort to consolidate with another school district didn't work, so voters in the AlWood School District will be asked to consider hiking property taxes.

The AlWood School Board recently approved putting a question on the November election ballot asking voters to approve an 80-cent hike in the Education Fund property tax levy, from $2.65 per $100 of assessed value, to $3.45.

District-225 Superintendent Shannon Bumann tells WGIL the decision was made in part thanks to some real good research done by the committee that investigated consolidating the AlWood and ROWVA School Districts. "We did gain a lot of valuable information from the Committee of Ten. They did a wonderful job," Bumann said. "It gave us the opportunity to really look into the financial situation of both districts. And out of that...came some good stuff."

Bumann says he believes the district will have to consider consolidating with another district at some point in the future, but believes the property tax increase would hold that off for awhile. He says a group of citizens has been put together called "80 in '08" that is helping get the word out about the proposed levy increase, and he wants all residents of the district to make sure they let their voices be heard.

The AlWood School Board will vote on their budget for the current school year September 15th. For more information on the AlWood school district, CLICK HERE.
