A Lot of Galesburg Firefighter Boots Filled for MDA
An annual effort that Galesburg firefighters take part in this time of year -- one that you've likely seen if you've been out this weekend, is garnering a special award from the national organization they're trying to help.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association recently presented Galesburg firefighters with a special award marking not only the fire department's Sesquicentennial anniversary, but also their work through the annual "Fill the Boot" campaign the weekend of the annual MDA Labor Day telethon, which starts Sunday night.

"I understand, too, that in the anniversary year, you also celebrate achieving the $200,000 mark in total funds contributed to MDA through your Fill the Boot program," Lewis wrote in the letter. "Your support of MDA has gone far above and beyond the call."

Galesburg firefighters will be out at a number of area intersections Sunday. They ask drivers stopped there to roll down their windows and give a few bucks to help in the fight to find a cure for neuromuscular diseases.
