Stearman Fly-In Starts Monday; Get Schedule Here
The air traffic over Galesburg is likely to be busy over the next week.

Monday marks the official start of the 37th Annual National Stearman Fly-In. And participants have been flying into the Galesburg Municipal Airport with their vintage World War Two-era biplanes named after the person who started building them, Lloyd Stearman.

National Stearman Fly-In Committee Board Member Philip Wolford tells WGIL while the pilots will be here and will likely spend the next six nights here, they'll have plenty to do, and plenty of time to compete. "We have different contests; you'll see a lot of airplanes in formation flying over town, practicing," Wolford said. "In the middle of the week, they'll do a lot of formation practice, and the actual contest for that will be Saturday. It's open to the public, but...several judges will judge three different formations -- the "v" formation, "star," and so forth."

Wolford and other organizers say the pilots will travel to a number of area destinations, starting with Monday's final day of the Labor Day Weekend festival "Hog Days" in Kewanee, the Prime Beef Festival Parade Wednesday in Monmouth, and others. There also will be chances for the public to view the planes and talk with pilots.
