Route 34 From Henderson County to Iowa Fully Reopened
The Illinois Department of Transportation says flooding from the Mississippi River has finally receded enough to completely re-open a stretch of a well-travelled highway. IDOT Peoria Operations Engineer Shane Larson says Route 34 has resumed full traffic between Henderson County and Iowa; it had been reduced to one-lane for a few weeks.

Larson tells WGIL all in all, he's surprised at just how well Route 34 has held up since the flooding began. "The road surface itself is, really, in pretty good shape," Larson said. "We had some problems with the aggregate along the shoulders that got washed away with the flood waters. But, for the most part, the road itself held up pretty well considering it was under water for four, five, six weeks."

Larson says a couple things worked in IDOT's favor...one, the kind of current washing away roads and homes in Iowa just didn't happen here; and two, part of the road embankment in that area has a lot of sand in it, which he says helped drain the water quicker.

Larson says Carman Road remains closed because of flood waters still there, but he expects that will be reopened in the next week or two.
