State Officials: Budget Mess Equals Possible Furloughs
The Illinois Secretary of State's office hopes you won't be affected, but it may have to furlough or lay off workers in light of recent budget cuts enacted by Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Secretary of State spokesman Henry Haupt says furloughs -- or unpaid days off -- would be easier on the office's employees. "Everything's on the table right now," he said. "We're negotiating with the unions on the possibility of furlough days. Basically, we would need all 3,800 employees within of the secretary of state to take furlough days to minimize the potential for layoffs."

The office is reportedly considering seven days’ worth of furloughs.

Haupt stresses that no one wants operations at the driver's license facilities, title registration desks, or other areas to be impacted. "Any potential furlough days or anything of that nature would be done in manner in which it wouldn't impact public service," he said. Other constitutional officers are also looking at how to deal with double-digit cuts.
