Abingdon Community Festival Starts Thursday
Residents of Abingdon will be coming together this weekend to celebrate themselves, and have a last dose of fun before the fall season and the school year both begin.

The annual Abingdon Community Festival gets underway Thursday evening running through Monday -- and organizers say there are plenty of things for both young and old alike.

Abingdon Community Festival Association Board Secretary Angie Dierickx tells WGIL Saturday and Sunday should be the festival's big draws, with everything from food to live entertainment. "Saturday morning is the livestock judging, and the cake and pie judging," Dierickx said. "The cakes and pies get sold on Saturday night after our entertainment. The entertainment this year is...a magician and a comedian all in one. The cakes and pies are sold after that. Then, Sunday night, is our biggest event, which is our demolition derby. And on Monday night, our fair ends with livestock awards and an auction."

Events for the first half of the festival include a chicken and pig scramble Thursday night, and figure-eight races Friday night. Many of the events are free, but Dierickx says some of the entertainment acts will cost admission.
