FIRST ON WGIL: Son of Former Ag Secretary Killed in Motorcycle Crash in Rural Knox County
UPDATED: 1:45pm 8/1/09 The son of a former U.S. Agriculture Secretary from Knox County has died as the result of a motorcycle crash Friday evening in rural Knox County.

The Knox County Sheriffs Department has identified the victim of the crash as 50-year old Hans Block. Block, deputies say, was riding a motorcycle that collided with a car in the 1300 block of Knox Highway 7 around 6pm Friday.

Deputies say when they along with Victoria Fire personnel and the Galesburg Hospitals Ambulance Service arrived on the scene, they quickly determined that there were no signs of life in Block. Knox County Coroner Mark Thomas pronounced Block dead at the scene of the crash just after 7pm.

Deputies aren't releasing any other details, but say their investigation is continuing and more details could later be released. Eyewitnesses tell WGIL the car appeared to have rear-ended Block's motorcycle.

Block is the son of former Ag Secretary John Block, who served six years in that capacity in the Reagan Administration. The Block family raises corn and hogs on their farm in rural Gilson.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
