Check on the Vulnerable During Extreme Heat
CHICAGO (AP) -- State health officials say the elderly are particularly vulnerable when the temperatures rise.

The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for portions of the state through Sunday evening. That includes the Galesburg area, where a heat advisory is in effect until 7 p-m Sunday. We could see a high temperature that reaches the mid-90s and heat index readings over 100.

While this weekend's projected temperatures in the 90s aren't unusual for August, it's been a cool summer. Weather and public health officials say that means it can feel hotter than normal.

The Health Care Council of Illinois says seniors should wear light colored and loose fitting clothes as well as sunglasses and a hat.

To avoid heat exhaustion, health officials say drink plenty of water and avoid going outside if possible.
