FIRST ON WGIL: Law Crafted by Moffitt to Help Fire Departments Expand
POSTED 8/9/09 A local lawmaker's bill to help local fire departments across the state expand through a no-interest state loan has been signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn.

Quinn Friday signed into law House Bill 38 -- crafted by State Representative Don Moffitt -- that creates a revolving loan fund for essentially the building or re-building of fire stations, and puts $2-million in that fund.

Moffitt says expansion or rehabbing would otherwise be a costly proposition. "We know the need is huge. We know of several departments that either can't get all their trucks in because the building's not large enough or the doors are not large enough."

Moffitt says he was thrilled that Governor Quinn signed the Fire Station Revolving Loan Fund bill into law.

Fire Departments approved for such revolving loans will have 25 years to pay them back.

Among the other benefits, the Gilson Republican says the issuing of such loans also creates jobs.
