| Residents, Vendors Scream for Ice Cream |
The city of Galesburg, businesspeople, and aldermen apparently have somewhat differing views on just how much of a problem ice cream trucks are in the city's parks.
The Galesburg City Council last week heard on first reading a proposal to essentially disallow private food vendors such as ice cream trucks from being at any city park unless they're under contract with the city.
City Manager Dane Bragg told aldermen ice cream trucks making their way through city parks has already gotten out of hand. "Itinerant food vendors have been utilizing park areas recently, causing significant disruption in some areas," Bragg said. "And, they compete with city-operated concession services at those locations."
But resident Mike Kroll said it can't be hurting, for example, the concession stand at Lake Storey that badly, because he feels those operations aren't run well to begin with. Kroll offers an alternative.
"If you simply put a requirement that says that no vendor could be open for sale within 500 feet or 750 feet of a city concession stand that is in operation, that alone would solve the problem," Kroll said.
Kroll says what's more, the proposed ordinance as it was written would ban ice cream trucks from stopping at city parks without concession stands as well. And at least one ice cream truck told aldermen he does the best he can to run his trucks in a safe manner while trying to make it in a difficult economy.
The proposed itinerant vendor ordinance will be up for a vote next Monday. |
