Severe Weather Hits Galesburg Area...Sort Of
UPDATED: 8:07am 8/10/09 For lack of a better term, if it wasn't one thing with the weather over the weekend, it was another.

The National Weather Service says the heat and high humidity over the weekend that left temperatures in the 90's but with heat indices that made it feel like 100 or more, gave way to a round of severe thunderstorms late Sunday night.

Forecasters say the storms came through Galesburg but didn't necessitate any severe weather warnings locally, but they did cause either damage or heavy rain in other areas.

Meteorologists at the Quad Cities Weather Service office say heavy rain, pea-sized hail, and winds gusting near 60 miles per hour were reported in Little York, while Oquawka reported one and a quarter inches of rain in one hour last night, causing temporarily flooded roads. Trees and branches were reported down near Oquawka and elsewhere in Henderson County.

There are no storm reports available from the Weather Service office in Lincoln, which covers Galesburg, but eyewitnesses say other than some rain and a brilliant lightning show, there are no other reports of damage.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect at one point, but was later cancelled.

Rain, heat, and high humidity remain in the forecast for Monday, but sunshine, dry weather, and temperatures in the mid-80's look to dominate most of the rest of the week.
