Weather Actually Helping Crops For a Change
It's finally starting to feel like summer, and Illinois farmers appreciate the lack of rain in the past week. The weekly crop progress report from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service shows a pretty good week for corn and soybeans, but their progress is still behind the average.

Corn is 29 percent in the dough stage, compared to 45 percent a year ago and 70 percent for the five-year average. Soybeans are 42 percent in the pod stage, compared to 52 percent a year ago and 77 percent for the five-year average.

"Average temperatures were quite near normal, just one tenth of a degree above normal across the state," says Mark Schleusener, deputy director of the Illinois Field Office for the statistics bureau. "Precipitation was slightly below normal. Rainfall averaged 0.82 inches."
