Still Good and Bad News in Area Crop Report
The weather is once again the dominant word in the USDA's Weekly Crop Progress Report for Illinois -- but this time, it's a good thing, with some exceptions in the immediate region.

The report indicates that the recent spate of hot temperatures along with some rain actually helped corn and soybeans, even though they continue to remain below averages.

USDA Deputy Chief Crop Statistician for Illinois, Mark Schleusener, says the turn to actual summer, especially over the weekend, did some good.

"Warmer weather came to Illinois near the end of last week," Schleusener said. "In fact, it got pretty darn hot for the first time in a while. Overall, though, average temperatures were quite near normal; just one tenth of a degree above normal across the state. Precipitation was slightly below normal last week. Rainfall averaged 0.82 inches."

The Western crop reporting district was well above the statewide average, reporting 1.23 inches of rain. Temperatures were also above the state average -- at 74.1 degrees, they were just .2 degrees above normal.

As for crop progress, the report indicates 84% of the corn has silked, while 25% is in the dough stage in this region -- lower than the 92% and 29% state averages respectively.

This region had less days suitable for fieldwork than anywhere else in the state as well.
