Governor Makes Amendatory Veto to Juvenile Justice Law
The state would do better at rehabilitating young offenders, rather than see them as repeat offenders, if a bill the Juvenile Justice Initiative is pushing succeeds.

The Juvenile Justice Commission would study juvenile parole violators and recommend ways the state could do better at helping the juveniles stay out of trouble. The governor changed the bill by pushing back -- until next year -- the due date of the commission's report. The General Assembly could approve the governor's changes in the fall veto session.

The Springfield-based Juvenile Justice Initiative says keeping a juvenile in custody costs more than $70,000 – and it would be cheaper to keep them from coming back.
