Abingdon Community Festival Starts Thursday
Officials in Abingdon say they hope anyone looking to get their kids out of the house one last time before school starts will consider making the trip to Abingdon this weekend.

The 54th annual Abingdon Community Festival starts Thursday afternoon and continues through the weekend. Abingdon Community Festival Association Secretary Angie Dierickx says some of the activities were switched around this year, including kids events being scheduled for Saturday instead of Sunday, and various livestock judging events being moved to Monday so they do not coincide with judging also going on at the Illinois State Fair.

Dierickx tells WGIL as always, though, one of the most popular events will still take place Saturday -- the cake and pie judging and auction.

"We have about 100 entries, I would say, of area bakers, youngsters, anywhere from age 6 up to 100," Dierickx said. "They bake a different variety of pies, cakes, cookies. The cookies are only for our junior entries. There's also junior cakes and adult cakes, and adult pies."

Dierickx says other events include judging of arts, crafts, vegetables, and flowers Thursday along with a band performing for teenagers at night, the Figure 8 derby on Friday and the demolition derby on Sunday.

Admission into the festival at the city's festival grounds is free, except for the nights of the figure 8 and demo derbies.
