Quinn Says Budget Needs Constant Monitoring
State leaders can wait until January to reassess the budget, or they can keep tabs on it every day between now and then. Which path will they choose?

Gov. Pat Quinn, who last week announced billions in budget cuts, says the wise way is for him and lawmakers to keep an eye on the budget right along, so that come January, there are no surprises. "Every single day, we have to monitor it," he said. "Every single day, we’ll be making cuts in state government."

The budget enacted last month calls for a re-evaluation in January, but Quinn does not want to wait until January if problems can be identified sooner.

Quinn says he will renew his push for an income tax increase in October, recognizing that by then, some lawmakers unconvinced of the need earlier this year may see enough ethical and financial reforms to be willing to vote for it.
