FIRST ON WGIL: Knoxville School Board to Undergo Self-Evaluation
The Knoxville School Board is going to do something that its president says hasn't been done in four years.

The board, following a meeting with a representative of the Illinois Association of School Boards as part of a retreat Wednesday night, agreed to conduct a self-evaluation -- a process the association facilitates to figure out how the board is doing and how it can improve.

Board president Robert Bogard tells WGIL last April's election pretty much determined that he and his colleagues need to take a step back.

"Since the recent school board election, the concerns in the community have got us wanting to be more focused on the community problems and what they're interested in getting done," Bogard said. "The self-evaluation will help set the goals and standards for us so we can do a better job as board members."

Bogard says the self-evaluation, scheduled for September 8th, will eventually lead to a separate session where goal-setting will take place. Once all that's done, Bogard says work can begin to search for another superintendent. The board previously determined that it will not renew the contract of Larry Carlton.

The District-202 board has a special meeting scheduled for Thursday night at six o'clock to deal with two issues connected to the expansion of Mabel Woolsey Elementary School.
