Fundraiser Helps Troops Phone Home
An event will start Saturday afternoon in Monmouth that organizers hope will give more troops the chance to phone home for free.

The Monmouth V-F-W Post 2301 is hosting a fundraiser starting at 1pm Saturday to benefit "Operation Uplink" -- a program that started out as giving phone cards to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, and also to hospitalized veterans, but Quartermaster Dan Merry says has grown to allow for free calling on certain days -- including holidays -- for all troops.

Merry tells WGIL a pretty important piece of military equipment will be the centerpiece of activities today.

"An Apache helicopter, which is flying out of Fort Knox, Kentucky is going to land in our parking lot. I thought this was an out of reach program to get this here but we got it approved - he will be here. We have the Army and the Army National Guard bringing in displays and rock climbing walls."

Merry says that's in addition to more National Guard displays, kids activities, an army jazz band, and more -- all at the Monmouth V-F-W.

All the proceeds, he says, will go to the "Operation Uplink" program.
