U of I Board Chair Resigns Amid Cloud Scandal
CHICAGO (AP) -- The chairman of the University of Illinois' Board of Trustees has resigned amid an investigation into the use of political clout to get underqualified students into the school.

In a statement Monday, Niranjan Shah says he decided to submit his resignation after members of a state commission investigating the university's admissions practices said they think the trustees should step down.

Shah is the second trustee to resign. Former chairman Lawrence Eppley quit last week.

Shah had said as recently as Friday that he wasn't planning to leave the board.

He says his resignation is effective in 90 days or sooner if his successor is in place.

Gov. Pat Quinn appointed the commission after news reports revealed the school's Urbana-Champaign campus kept a list of politically connected applicants.
