Random Drug Testing Back on Galesburg School Board Agenda
The final approval needed in order for the official implementation of a random drug testing program for students involved in any extra curricular activities at Galesburg High School could come Monday night.

The Galesburg School Board will consider using the services of Galesburg Cottage Hospital as the administrator of the random drug testing program.

District officials had said when the plan was first approved that they were in talks with several potential vendors about implementing the program, but they now say that Cottage Hospital submitted the only proposal.

A specific dollar amount wasn't disclosed prior to Monday, but the district does say that their fees are at or less than costs that other school districts have for such programs.

Students found to test positive could face sanctions including a possible drug treatment program through Bridgeway.

The school board meeting, delayed a week due to scheduling conflicts, comes one day before contract talks continue between the district and its teachers union, through the use of a federal mediator.

Talks took nearly 10 hours last Tuesday but ended in an agreement for another meeting, and also resulted in a meeting of the Galesburg Education Association being moved to this Wednesday.

The Galesburg School Board meets at 7 p-m inside the board room at Lincoln School.
