Crops Looking Good Thanks to Heat, Humidity
You might not like to sleep during the warm and humid weather, but it's good for agriculture. Those are the conditions in which corn, soybeans, and several other crops thrive, and it’s showing up in the numbers in the crop progress report for last week.

USDA crop statistician Brad Schwab said, "Much needed rain fell this past weekend, while warmer weather earlier last week aided in crop development. There were 6.1 days suitable for field work reported."

The report shows corn in the dough stage is at 46 percent, still 17 percentage points behind last year. Soybeans are 58 percent setting pods, compared to 68 percent in 2008 and 87 percent for the five-year average.

Sorghum is 54 percent headed, compared to 66 percent last year and the 87 percent five-year average. 85 percent of the oat crop has been harvested, compared to 100 percent in recent years. Alfalfa is 43 percent cut, compared to 63 percent in 2008 and 69 percent for the five-year average.
