Quinn Signs Bill to Boost Demand for Locally-Grown Food
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a law designed to increase demand for locally grown food.

It sets up a system in which state agencies would purchase 20 percent of their food from local sources by 2020.

Those who buy food for state facilities and programs would be allowed to pay 10 percent more than the lowest bid if they're buying locally grown produce.

Quinn used Agriculture Day at the Illinois State Fair as a backdrop to sign the measure on Tuesday.

Sen. Jacqueline Collins of Chicago sponsored the measure and says it will increase the availability of fresh and healthy foods for low-income areas in Chicago while expanding markets for Illinois farmers.
