State Health Officials Urge Flu Shots
The Illinois Department of Public Health is ramping up for flu season, and this year they are encouraging everyone to get a seasonal flu shot. Spokeswoman Melaney Arnold says the push for seasonal shots is so if and when the Swine Flu hits, hospitals won’t be overwhelmed.

"We would like everyone to get a seasonal flu vaccine, get a seasonal flu shot," Arnold said. "That way, if and when [Swine Flu] becomes more impactful, we can cut down on the number of people needing medical services."

While there will be plenty of seasonal flu shots available, Arnold says there will be a limited supply of Swine Flu vaccine when flu season hits.

The Centers for Disease Control had hoped for 120 million doses in time for flu season, but estimates now show 45 million doses to start, with additional doses made available in the weeks to follow.

Arnold says the IDPH is in the process looking at places to distribute those doses in Illinois.
