Central Illinois Ravaged by Wednesday Storms; Galesburg Spared
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The strong storms that raged through central Illinois injured at least 19 people and destroyed dozens of homes and businesses.

The storms descended on the Springfield area Wednesday afternoon, causing severe damage in Williamsville and Loami.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Patrick Bak says storm survey teams will evaluate the damage in Sangamon, Logan, Morgan and Scott counties to determine if the destruction was caused by tornadoes. Bak says another cold front heading into Illinois could bring more bad weather to eastern and southern Illinois on Thursday.

Twelve injured people were taken to St. John's Hospital, where two were admitted in fair condition. Nursing coordinator Roscoe Cook says one was injured when a car was flipped by the wind and the other was blown off his motorcycle.

Seven others were treated at Memorial Medical Center.

While Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and a Flash Flood Watch were issued for the Galesburg area, there were not believed to be any lingering problems because of the storms.
