Altona Woman Nets Thousands at Governor's Sale of Champions
A Knox County resident has plenty of extra cash on her hands after doing well showing livestock at the Illinois State Fair.

Sarah DeSchepper of Altona had both the Grand Champion and Land of Lincoln Grand Champion sheep at the State Fair's Sale of Champions Tuesday night. The Grand Champion, named "Shake 'n Bake," sold for $7,500, while the Land of Lincoln Grand Champion, called "Chip," sold for just over $4,500.

DeSchepper and her family members have had state fair champion sheep in previous years, and she tells WGIL showing livestock and especially sheep is really a family affair. "We all work very hard every day," DeSchepper said. "We go out there, pick them out in the spring, get them home, and start halter-breaking them, taking them down a little bit. Over the summer you work every day exercising them; you try to exercise them every day. When it rains, it's a little hard to get out in the yard, but you work them hard, and learn how to show, take them around to shows...then get them to the State Fair."

DeShepper had Grand Champion and Land of Lincoln Grand Champion sheep in 2006, and a Land of Lincoln Grand Champion in 2007 before taking last year off.

She wasn't the only area resident that had success Tuesday night in the Sale of Champions. Peter Elliot of Monmouth had a Grand Champion Chicken that sold for $8,000.

Ag Day at the State Fair also recognized the Nelson Family Farms of Lynn Center in Henry County. They were named the 2009 Illinois Pork Producer Family of the Year.
