Cool Weather Not All That Great for Crops
Cool summer nights are nice for us, but it's not the best for the state's crops. While corn and soybean progress improved last week, USDA crop statistician Brad Schwab says it would be better if the state hadn't recently had cool weather. Schwab says the average temperatures have been up to seven degrees lower for the previous four weeks, meaning not-quite-optimal growing conditions.

Corn is 80 percent silked, up from the previous week's 53 percent, and compared to last year's 90 percent and the 97 percent five-year average. Soybeans are 63 percent blooming, up from 46 percent, and compared to last year's 71 percent and the 89 percent five-year average.

Overall crop conditions are down for both corn and soybeans.
