Record Fine Imposed on Meth Conviction
A Galesburg man will be spending the next several years in prison and will be given a fine that the Knox County State's Attorney says he's never seen before.

A statement from State's Attorney John Pepmeyer's office says 49-year old Kevin Carnes was sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison, after pleading guilty to Aggravated Participation in Meth Manufacturing as part of a plea agreement.

Pepmeyer's office says Carnes also received a $30,000 fine, and was assessed almost $4,000 additionally in court fees.

Prosecutors say Carnes was arrested three times between last year and this year on meth-related charges -- the most serious of those was connected to a house fire last year in the 700 block of East North Street. Carnes and two others were injured in the fire, which officials pinned to a suspected meth lab. He was taken to a Springfield hospital for what officials termed serious burns.

Pepmeyer said in the statement, the message he's sending with the conviction is, in part, "Meth is dangerous."
