"Teen Idol" Remains at Knox County Fair
The man in charge of the Knox County Fair says he's impressed with the success with what has become one of the fair's premiere events in a short amount of time.

The 159th Knox County Fair starts Tuesday, and with it, the annual Knox County "Be Real" Teen Idol competition, giving teens a change to sing their favorite songs a la "American Idol" for prizes.

Fair Board president Tom Collopy tells WGIL the event, now in its seventh year, has really taken off. "It started out very small," Collopy said. "I think when it was started, (organizers) told me to put up 25 chairs; they'd have 25 spectators and 20 contestants. They needed 200 the first time they had it. It's very popular."

The event is sponsored by the Knox County University of Illinois Extension and Bridgeway -- and is a vehicle for them to promote the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They say that every participant in Teen Idol must sign a statement that they are free of those substances.

Preliminary rounds are 5:30 Tuesday and Wednesday nights, with the finals Saturday afternoon at 1, all in the Munson Building.
