State Fairs are Work for Illinois Politicians
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- For politicians, the Illinois State Fair is as much a rite of summer as it is for farmers showing their animals.

Both Republicans and Democrats had specially designated days last week to flaunt their 2010 candidates at the fair in Springfield.

They gave speeches, handed out campaign pamphlets, shook hands, even hired an airplane to tow a banner over the fairgrounds.

And they'll do it all again next month at the DuQuoin State Fair as the February primary election approaches.

The fair gives the Democrats and Republicans who want those jobs a chance to lock in support from local party officials.

They can be the key to winning a primary because they influence campaign workers who knock on doors, pass out literature and make calls on behalf of favored candidates.
