Galesburg Aldermen, Employees' Union Question Proposed Airport Agreements
POSTED 1:39am 8/4/09 The Galesburg City Council isn't yet sold on a pair of agreements that would essentially continue make a change to how the city's airport is managed, and what kind of revenue the city gets from the airport.

Aldermen Monday night tabled an amended lease by JetAir for use of the Galesburg Municipal Airport, and also tabled an agreement that would have Jet Air president Harrell Timmons act as manager of the airport, when the city's current airport and cemetery supervisor retires later this year.

City officials say an airport maintenance worker will also retire, whose position will not be filled, which will leave Jet Air responsible for maintenance and snow removal.

That drew the ire of a number of aldermen and residents. One of them -- a city employee who refused to identify herself to reporters but told aldermen she was Lynn Hayes of Rio -- said she doesn't get why the city wouldn't keep the position.

"Our concern is, you're taking away a job from a city employee and giving it to the airport, with a lot of...gonna fall back on us," Hayes said.

The agreement would state that the city would come in and help plow snow at the airport when over six inches has fallen.

The city says such an arrangement will save money, but Hayes and members of AFSCME believe nothing will be further from the truth.

Aldermen agreed to table the proposal and take it up in a work session.
