Galesburg City Council Rejects Road Project
The Galesburg City Council has called into question at least one road resurfacing project that city officials had hoped to start soon.

Aldermen last Monday unanimously rejected rejected an almost two-hundred-thousand dollar bid from Guenther Construction to resurface West Losey Street from Linwood Road to Kings Canyon Boulevard, and rejected the spending of Motor Fuel Tax funds to make it happen.

Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen says he thinks the money can be put to good use somewhere else.

"In Ward 6, Ward 1, and Ward 2 and all wards, are streets that are so much worse than this. Ward 6 has Pleasant Avenue, all breaking loose at the edges and hadn't had anything done for 30-some years."

First Ward Alderman Ken Goad says he can think of a road that's in worse shape than that.

"I would like to see that money used on Hawkinson Avenue between Losey and Freemont. That street is in very bad condition and it's one of the main avenues to our high school and I think we need to represent our city well by having a good street."

City officials say the original determination to resurface a portion of West Losey was made based on an average 20-year lifespan of most roads.

The city plans on a work session for the second council meeting in September on proposed road projects for the 2010 calendar year.
